This is a common question in interviews. When you search for this question online, you will find answers like “don’t tell the amount” and “be open and let the employer tell you first.” Those days are gone. Nowadays, everybody watches YouTube videos and reads articles, so they know if you give that answer, you probably read it online.
The best way is to tell the amount that you expect, but you cannot give a vague amount. There are three cases in which you can answer this question:
1. Do your research and tell the salary
Based on your skills, experience, and knowledge, do market research on websites like Glassdoor or ask your friends how much they are paying for similar roles in their companies. Get an average amount. If you are okay with that amount, tell the employer like this:
“I have done my research. Considering my experience and current skills, similar roles are offering an average of 10 Lakhs per annum. I would be grateful if you could provide a better salary than this.”
“I have done my research. For this kind of role, on average, the market is paying around 2 Lakhs per month. I believe I have the necessary skills and experience required for this role, and I am expecting a better salary considering the reputation of your company.”
2. You already have a job and are expecting a better salary
“Currently, I am getting a salary of 10 Lakhs per annum. In the last 5 years, I have improved my skills, and my experience will be a great asset for a new company that I join. So, I am expecting a 20% raise so that I can accept a new challenge.”
3. If you don’t have any job, or don’t like your current job
“In my current job, I am getting a salary of 10 Lakhs per annum. Considering my experience, I expect to get a better salary than that amount.”
