What is Cessation (Short Service) in EPF

Cessation means short service, whenever an employee leaves his job due to resignation or absconding then he can select this option to update date of exit (DOE) in the EPF portal. Cessation is the widely used option to update the date of exit reason in EPF.

Once the date of exit is updated with the reason of Cessation (Short Service) then EPF members can withdraw their full PF amount after 2 months from the date of exit.

What is Duration of Cessation (Short Service) in PF

There is no duration limit to update exit reasons with the reason cessation or short service. Even the employee works for one day still he can update his date of exit with a reason for cessation.

But if the total service of the emmployee is below 6 months then he can withdraw only PF amount not pension amount. To withdraw pension amount employees must have minimum 6 months service.

Is Cessation and Termination are Same

As per meaning they are not same, but still when an employer terminates an employee then they can use this option to update their date of exit.

Except in case of retirement or supernnuation or permanent disablement or death employee in remaining cases the reason of exit should be cessation (short service)

How to withdraw PF After Cessation

After 2 months from the date of exit the EPF members can withdraw their PF amount online at UAN member portal.

To withdraw their PF amount they need to submit a form called form 19 and to withdraw their pension contributions they need to submit a form called form 10C.

After submitting these forms online at UAN member portal they will get their PF amount into their bank account with in 20 days.

    • Maybe your service is less than 6 months, consider the time period between your date of joining and date of leaving on the UAN member portal.
You submit form 10c minimum of 6 months service is required, otherwise, you cannot withdraw it, but you can transfer it later when you join a new job.

My joint date is 02/01/2009, Exist date is as mentioned default in portal 30/4/2020. my Actual exist date is 12/9/2020. Already i mentioned previous thread “I can’t edit exist date”. So i entered the default date in portal.

  2. i had applied for Form 10C, But complete amount was not credited to my account. Reason for leaving job was Short Service.

    • Do you have multiple PF acocunts? if yes then you have to transfer your PF and pension to your latest PF account.
If you don’t have multiple PF accounts then register a complaint on the EPF grievance portal website, they will give an exact reason why less pension was credited.

    • To change the date of exit reason you need to write a request letter to your PF office, and the request letter should be signed by your employer with their stamp.
There is no online system to correct the date of exit reason.

Now the total time till now is crossed 5 years.. Can I withdraw total amount including pension without submitting 15g? For not deducting TDS?

        • You shouldn’t consider the unemployment period, only the PF contribution period should be considered.
As per your details, your service is below 5 yrs, and if your PF amount is above 50K then you have to submit Form 15G.

    • You have to submit form 19 and 10C to withdraw full PF and pension amounts. Short service is the right reason.
You can find the reason for claim rejection in PF claim status portal, solve that problem and reapply again.

    • When an employee resigns or absconds in both cases the employer will update the reason for exit as cessation.
I think it is not a problem.

      • If you have left your job after 58 years of your age then it will be considered as superannuation.
If you left your job before 58 years of your age, then it will be treated as cessation(short service) but still, you are eligible for pension after 58 of your age.
If you are facing any problem in claiming pension then raise a complaint on the EPF grievance portal website.
