Are your organization has no EPF members to make contributions for a particular month and do you want to know how to file EPF nil returns, then here the complete guide on how to file EPF nil returns. In general, every employer needs to make EPF payments by 15th of every month and the process involves generation of ECR text file and uploading it into unified PF portal and finally PF challan entry i.e filling PF challan account details like A/C No.1, A/C No.2, A/C No.10 & A/C No.21

But when you file EPF nil returns then there is no need to prepare any ECR text file, you can directly start with Challan filling. Here is the process of EPF nil returns filing:

In order to file EPF nil returns login to Employer EPF portal with user id and password. Now go to payments option in the primary menubar and select Payment (Direct Challan).

Now Click On Challan Entry.

Now enter the wage month and select challan type as administrative and inspection charges challan. Now you have to enter Account no 2 and Account number 22. After entering A/C No.2 and A/C No.22 click on Next.

  • Account no.2 EPF admin charges 75 Rs
  • Account no.22 EDLI Admin Charges 25 Rs

Now verify and finalize the challan, After finalization, your EPF nil challan will generate and make the payment. If you find anything wrong then click on edit and make the changes.

How Much EPF Admin Charges for Nil Return

The EPF admin charges (a/c no.2) 75 Rs is for Non-functional establishment i.e which doesn’t have any contributory member for that particular month.  In remaining cases, the minimum EPF administration charge is 500 Rs.

The EDLI admin charges (a/c no 22) for the Non-functional establishment which doesn’t have any contributory member is 25 Rs. In remaining cases, there is no need to pay EDLI admin charges.

    Is it possible to rectify wrong wage month uploaded for filing nil PF return. I filed for July instead of June. Is there any way to rectify the error. And I can file the return again for proper wage month.

    in our company only one employee is there, but she has not opted for PF, so how much i have to pay for Nill return ?? 100 or 500?. And after paying 100 or 500 how should file the return ??

    I was register with epfo in July 2015 and I was prepare nil challan till feb 2016 and not any employee work till now. I have not generate any challan till now today I want to pay nill challan of all the month till now please tell will challan prepare 36 nos one by one or single nil challan can be made with sum of rupees all months.please also tell is any penalties charges applicable or not and tell some short step for this.

  6. Sir, I have read all the above comments. I’m totally satisfied with you also request you to please answer my some of the queries mentioned below:-

    – Is it compulsory to pay 100 Rs. administrative challan (In A/C No.2- 75 Rs. and A/C No.22- 75) monthly even the employees not working in firm or a company?
    – Kindly provide the situations when we have to pay 500 Rs. and 100 Rs. challans.
    – Instead of paying administrative challan (100/500 Rs.). Shall we pay the PF amount to any one employee?
    – Is there any way to get rid from PF (I meant surrender or something). As my firm is not working in construction department anymore. Currently I’m maintaining a small trading fiirm.

    Your help in this matter will be heartily appreciated.

      -Until you cancel your company’s PF registration till then you have to pay 100 Rs minimum charges.
      -When there are no PF members then we have to pay 100 Rs, in normal cases when there are employees then we have to pay 500 Rs minimum admin charges, for example after calculating 0.50% admin charges on PF wages, if we get 400 Rs then we have to pay minimum 500 Rs. If the 0.50% calculation gives more than 500 Rs then we have to pay that higher amount. Suppose if we got 700 Rs then we have to pay 700 Rs.
      -Even if you have one employee also you can pay the PF. (minimum 20 employees are required only for EPF registration)
      -To cancel PF registration of your establishment you need to visit your regional EPF office.

Shall we pay the PF amount to any one employee?” Here I want to say that suppose in any month i only have one employee and I’m depositing his pf amount then I suppose to pay 100 Rs. challan also along with his challan?

        Last- Suppose if I’m paying for one or more than 1 employees, administrative amount of 500 Rs. remains same or for 1 employee it can be decreased !

        • If you are paying PF for 1 employee then you don’t need to pay 100 Rs but you have to pay 500Rs as minimum PF admin charges, it will not decrease.

  9. Hi sir, we have newly registered EPF on June 2018 but didn’t do nill return on July 2018 and aug 2018 now it will be paid …is there any penalty for not filing nill returns of June 2018

      When your company doesn’t have any contributory member then you have to pay 75rs as EPF admin charges in A/C no 2 and 25 Rs as EDLI admin charges in A/c no 22. So total you have to pay 100 Rs.

      Account no 2: 75 Rs
      Account no22: 25 Rs.

  13. Also we have pending to remit pf for 3 employees for the month of nov 17 and dec 17 yet. so in this case while generating challan do we need to enter Rs. 500 in A/c 2 for both month ??? as actual calculation amount for the 3 emp would be less /

    pls suggest in this case
